The Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) is an informal, state-led, non-binding process. It was created in 2007 to advance dialogue on migration and development issues among a range of stakeholders: civil society, the private sector, international and regional organisations, and governments. The GFMD chairmanship for 2022-2023 is shared by France and Senegal, and aims to share policies, practices, analyses and debates concerning the impact of climate change on human mobility. This thematic focus addresses the urgent need to confront and reduce the disastrous consequences that climate change and environmental deterioration have on forcibly displaced persons and on human mobility. The perspective, experience and commitment of civil society, local authorities and the diaspora on this issue will feed the discussions.
The October 27th 2022 webinar, “On the Road to the GFMD Summit: how critical is it for African diaspora organisations, CSOs and local authorities?”
The importance of participating in the GFMD Civil Society Mechanism was highlighted during this webinar. The GFMD Civil Society Mechanism will conduct preparatory activities throughout 2023 with all global civil society organisations to prepare recommendations to be presented at the December 2023 summit in Paris. It is therefore crucial for African civil society organisations, the diaspora, and for local authorities to coordinate their actions and organise themselves to ensure that they have a clear and consensual voice and position at the GFMD summit.
